  • Posh Weekend Getaways, a Hawaiian Shirt Signed by Dr. Wells - Bids on Silent Auction Items Support Future Fraud Fighters

By Scott Patterson, ACFE Media Relations Specialist

It would look great, but no, you probably won't be able to wear the Hawaiian shirt to your weekend vacation in Las Vegas or Florida. One of Dr. Joseph T. Wells' favorites, the colorful shirt is autographed by the ACFE founder and Chairman himself – and it is framed and under glass.

The shirt and the vacation packages (including getaways to Chicago, Washington, D.C., Austin, San Diego and other locales) are among the hot items up for bid in the ACFE Foundation's fourth annual Silent Auction, supporting the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship Program and fraud examination research projects. Since its inception, more than $300,000 in scholarships have been distributed to deserving students worldwide.

Also up for bid are stylish articles of jewelry, including a Tiffany & Co. necklace and multi-gem mosaic earrings. There is sports memorabilia, like the Wes Welker-signed football and Dustin Pedroia autographed baseball. ACFE merchandise and intriguing gift baskets are up for bid, as well as "A Night Out in San Diego" and other local draws.

The prized auction items are donated by sponsors, ACFE members, ACFE chapters and other organizations and individuals who choose to contribute to this important cause. The Silent Auction closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, during the 22nd Annual ACFE Fraud Conference and Exhibition in San Diego - bids are currently being accepted online and can also be made on-site at the conference. The first opportunity on-site will be at the Welcome Reception (Monday night in the Exhibit Hall) and, after that, in the Ballroom Six Lobby next the breakout sessions. When the bidding ends at 5 on Tuesday, all of the valuable travel and gift packages, fraud memorabilia and other items will belong to their highest bidders.

Managed by an independent Board of Directors elected by the members of the ACFE, the ACFE Foundation is providing opportunities and resources on the front lines of anti-fraud education worldwide. In only its fourth year, the Silent Auction has quickly become the ACFE Foundation's largest fundraiser and a key source of funding for the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship program.

The Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship program was named after two members of the ACFE, Larry Jennings, CFE, CPA, and Tracy Ritchie, CFE, CPA, both of Houston, Texas. They were among five people fatally wounded when terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, fired upon their vehicle on Nov. 14, 1997.

The mission of the ACFE Foundation is to increase the body of anti-fraud knowledge and support future anti-fraud professionals worldwide through the funding of scholarships, endowments, research, and other educational projects. The Foundation works to encourage students to pursue careers in fraud examination and provide resources for research on the detection and deterrence of fraud.
