Panel Discussion:
Gender Considerations in Investigative Interviews

Conducting effective interviews of witnesses and suspects can be challenging for even the most seasoned investigator, and numerous factors—from the interviewing approach used, to the number of interviewers, to the power dynamics at play—can affect your ability to effectively gather information from the interviewee.

In this session, a panel of experienced investigative interviewers will share their perspectives about whether and how gender plays a role in these situations. You will learn about their experiences navigating gender dynamics in interview situations, how they have handled gender-based preconceptions as interviewers, and tactics to make (often incorrect) stereotypical gender characteristics work for you in your own interviews.

You Will Learn How To:

  • Recognize gender-based preconceptions that might be present in investigative interviews
  • Determine whether and how gender plays a role in investigative interviews
  • Identify ways to overcome gender stereotypes to conduct effective interviews

Fraud Trends to Watch

The fraud landscape seems to evolve at an increasing pace, and anti-fraud professionals must continuously find new ways to stay ahead of the perpetrators. What emerging fraud risks and trends are we collectively seeing as a community? What sources should we be watching to enable us to identify new and growing threats? How do different characteristics that we bring to our professional roles—like natural intuition or skepticism—help us or hinder us when it comes to monitoring and assessing these risks?

In this panel, you will hear from your peers in a variety of roles and industries about what they are currently seeing, as well as the most effective ways to identify new fraud trends to watch.

You Will Learn How To:

  • Identify the fraud risk trends to consider in your organization
  • Recognize characteristics that could assist or inhibit us from monitoring and assessing fraud risks
  • Determine sources to use to help identify growing risks

Panel Discussion:
The Role of Curiosity in Countering Bias

Many anti-fraud professionals seem to have an inherent tendency to ask, "Why?" This investigative curiosity is important in our roles as fact-finders in fraud examinations and investigations. But can it also help us counter our own inherent mental shortcuts and biases?

This panel session will explore the link between bias and curiosity, including whether curiosity serves to confirm existing biases and whether it can be used to overcome bias. You will also hear about ways to recognize potential biases and how they might appear in a professional context, as well as practical approaches to help harness the power of curiosity to mitigate biases that might occur in investigations.

You Will Learn How To:

  • Identify biases that show up in our professional lives
  • Determine how curiosity can eliminate biases that appear in investigations
